Reader Question of the Day

What are some of the properties used to describe reservoir rock?

Reservoir rock properties are essential characteristics that development geologists and reservoir engineers often consider. These properties include porosity, compressibility, and permeability. Porosity is the property that defines the fraction of the rock volume that is occupied by pore volume. This property essentially describes how much of the rock is made up of spaces that can contain fluids like oil or gas. Compressibility, on the other hand, refers to the relative change in the pore volume when pressure is either increased or decreased. It gives an idea of how much the pores in the rock can shrink or expand under different pressure conditions. Lastly, permeability is a measure of how easily liquids or gases can flow through the rock. It essentially describes the connectivity of the pores in the rock and how that affects fluid movement.
