Lone Star Stories

Flaring, a wasteful and environmentally damaging oil industry practice, has seen a resurgence in the Permian Basin in Texas and New Mexico, with the region burning approximately 97 billion cubic feet of fuel in the year ending June 30, reversing years of decline.

Following concerns from the 2021 winter storm and in anticipation of power challenges, ERCOT is seeking additional dispatchable generation and demand response solutions for December 2023 through February 2024.

Reader Question of the Day

What are the latest developments in lightweight and durable materials for oil industry equipment and structures?

Imagine having super-strong yet feather-light materials for building things. That's what's happening in the oil industry! New materials are being developed that are lightweight but also incredibly tough. For example, there are advanced metals and alloys that can resist corrosion from salty seawater, making them perfect for offshore drilling rigs. It's like having armor that's as light as a t-shirt but super protective.

These lightweight, durable materials mean that equipment can last longer and stand up to the harsh conditions found in oil extraction, whether it's deep-sea pressures or desert heat. Plus, being lighter means it's easier and more cost-effective to transport and install this equipment. So, the oil industry gets to have gear that’s not only more resilient but also more practical and economical, making tough jobs a bit easier.
