Lone Star Stories

The Texas Comptroller's office has published a report on the state government workforce for 2019-2023, highlighting high attrition rates, with lawmakers approving salary increases for state employees in the 2024-25 budget to tackle the issue.

Congressional Republicans have been quietly adding provisions to annual spending bills aimed at hindering U.S. government efforts to combat and research climate change. These provisions include mandates for leasing federal lands for oil and gas development and restrictions on leasing for wind power.

Reader Question of the Day

How are microorganisms used in the oil industry, for example in bioremediation or microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR)?

Microorganisms play key roles in the oil industry. In bioremediation, bacteria and fungi help clean up oil spills by metabolizing oil's hydrocarbons into less harmful substances like water and carbon dioxide. This is an environmentally friendly and cost-effective alternative to traditional cleanup methods.

In Microbial Enhanced Oil Recovery (MEOR), specific or engineered microbes are injected into oil reservoirs to improve oil extraction. These microbes generate substances or gases that enhance oil flow and increase reservoir pressure, thus making oil extraction more efficient, especially when conventional methods are ineffective or expensive.
