Lone Star Stories
A first-of-its-kind CDC report reveals 470 deaths in the U.S. oil and gas industry from 2014 to 2019, primarily due to vehicle crashes and object impacts, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced safety measures. While the Permian Basin showed fewer incidents relative to its production, experts call for more oversight, deeper research, and collaborative strategies to augment safety and curtail industry-related perils.
A 50% increase in mechanical outages and planned maintenance in U.S. oil refineries this year, particularly in the Midwest and West Coast, has led to tightening fuel supplies and a surge in gasoline prices, reaching $6 a gallon in places like Los Angeles and San Diego. The ongoing troubles and elevated crude oil prices are applying pressure on already depleted fuel inventories, foreshadowing potential further price hikes, even as a temporary switch to cheaper, winter-grade gasoline might offer short-term relief.
Reader Question of the Day
How is the industry innovating to address the challenges of extracting oil from increasingly complex and extreme environments?
Extracting oil from tough places, like deep underwater or icy regions, is like trying to bake a cake in a snowstorm! But, the oil industry is coming up with clever solutions. They’re using advanced technology, like robots and drones, to reach places that are too risky or tough for humans. These gadgets can withstand extreme conditions, from freezing cold to scorching heat, allowing companies to safely get oil from even the most challenging spots.
They’re also innovating with materials and designs. Imagine having super-strong drill bits that can cut through the hardest rocks without wearing out quickly. Or special ships that can operate in icy waters. By developing such equipment, the industry is ensuring that it can access oil in a variety of environments while managing the risks involved. It’s all about being smart and creative to get the job done!
